We have been hunting hard the past few days. Not getting into any shooter bucks this weekend we started to get back into our doe management program. I strongly believe in harvesting as many does as possible before the rut takes place in our area, middle to the end of November. Daniel and myself headed to a property in Stanley County for a short afternoon hunt, we had no idea it was going to be this short!
We rushed to the property and got all the gear together. With a bow and camera in hand we set out to the double set we’ve had some great success with in the past. We had about an hour and a half of filming light so we tried to get in as quickly and quietly as we could. As we eased in the edge of the woods exiting the field I heard the distinct sound of deer trotting through the brush. I whispered back to Daniel to pay attention because deer were already upon us.
Just as we topped the small hill headed to the stand the deer were running everywhere like we just busted a thicket full of rabbits! I quickly nocked an arrow, set my Madusa Max drop away and brought the range finder to my face. Not seeing any targets yet but being ready for one to reveal themselves. All of a sudden a doe stepped out of the thicket to our left looking for the rest of the herd. I quickly ranged her and she was standing pretty at 45 yards. I drew back my bow and there was a small cedar in between us. I took a step forward trying to get a clear shot and she jumped back a couple yards. I let down and took a couple more steps to my right to find a hole I could shoot through. Found my hole, adjusted my HHA Optimizer to 50 yards and drew back again. I practice at 60-80yds so this shot was well within my comfort level. I whispered to Daniel, “You got her? Do you see her? You got her?” He responded but I couldn’t tell if it was a yes or what. She was about to bolt so I sent the arrow flying hoping it was a “Yes, I got her”. SMACK! She hit the dirt just as fast as the arrow hit her! The Piledriver arrow with the Muzzy Trocar 125gr broadhead hit her like a ton of bricks. I was jacked up! All that long range shooting has paid off.
What a perfect shot, what a quick hunt and my emotions were all over the place. Daniel had the camera pointed at me while I was celebrating and doing my after the shot interview. Unfortunately I could see this blank look on his face that couldn’t bring any good news… “I’m sorry man… I must have double punched the record button…” DANG! We didn’t get the shot on film but we still had a deer on the ground. It happened so fast there’s really no telling what could have happened. I was just super proud that I made such a great shot through all the brush and over some fallen trees. That arrow couldn’t have flown any better dropping right into her shoulder. I couldn’t be mad we didn’t get it on film, it was pure chaos and it still ended in a deer on the ground!
